Like Dorothy’s path down the yellow brick road, my career has been an adventure filled with countless twists and turns - some expected, others not so much. (Today, we call that soft-skill a pivot.)
My career began at The Advocate, the national LGBTQ print magazine, where I wrote daily news briefs and pop culture commentary, and reported on long term projects during the historic gay marriage battles. Chasing my dream of one day calling myself a grown up journalist, I have continued to pitch my way to feature story assignments and travelogues for publications like Out, BBC Travel, Thrillist, and Sierra. (Nothing like seeing your name in print, iykyk!)
On the corporate side, I landed at Microsoft during the onset of virtual work where I owned strategy and comms for the Microsoft Customer Insights Research team and their web presence; then I produced video content for a user research team within the Cloud & AI division.
It’s my work in television and film, however, that always piques the most interest when people discover, usually at dinner parties, that I worked on Jersey Shore, the Bachelor Franchise, and The Apprentice, a trio of unscripted reality series that have made indisputable marks on our culture and, unfortunately, American democracy. (Try and change my mind about that.)
A few years ago, I made a leap into non-profit land as Communications Director for an abortion advocacy organization, a plot twist only the Wicked Witch would have seen coming.
When I zoom out and reflect on my career, the connective tissue is storytelling. From environmental issues, like the health of our public lands, to an intimate, personal tragedy experienced by a group of nuns, the stories I respond to most are those that connect us to our communities and shape who we are as people.
From traditional copy writing to social media campaigns to video production and editing, my skillset is sharp, my background diverse.
I once had a colleague who told people she specialized in results. I have borrowed that line many times in my career to explain what I do best. Full stop, I deliver.
